Ramchandra Siras

Ramchandra Siras (* 1948 in Nagpur ; † April 8, 2010 in Aligarh ) was an Indian linguist , author and university professor.

Life

Siras grew up in Nagpur. He studied at the local Hislop College and attended Nagpur University , where he received a PhD in Marathi in 1985 and a Masters in Psychology . He wrote his doctoral thesis on the work of the author Gajanan Tryambak Madkholkar . Siras worked as a research assistant at Ranchi University and then received a position as a university professor in the state of Uttar Pradesh at Aligarh Muslim University , where he was appointed reader in 1998 and served as chairman of the Department of Modern Indian Languages . He specialized in Comparative Indian Literature and Modern Marathi Literature. He also worked as an author. In 2002 he received the prize of the Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad literary society for his volume of poetry Paya Khalchi Hirawal (Grass Under My Feet) .

In February 2010, he was suspended from university administration for having sex with a man, which sparked protests from gay activists. The suspension was lifted in a lawsuit against Sira's original request. A few days later, Siras died in his private apartment at the age of 62.
