The Ramelau Mountains are the highest mountain range on the island of Timor .

They extend over the western third of the state of East Timor and, as the backbone of the tropical island, form a rough landscape in its center. South of the state capital Dili is the Tatamailau, the highest of the Ramelau mountains, of all mountains in Timor and, until 1975, also the highest mountain of the Portuguese colonial empire . In old sources, the 2963  m high mountain is also called Pico de Ramelau ( German  Ramelau peak ). The Cablac is striking further south with 2180  m , the surroundings of which are the National Park Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão . Around 1990 the area was a retreat for the East Timorese resistance fighters against the Indonesian invaders. The Tatamailau is located in a wildlife reserve.

From east to west the height of the mountains decreases. Again and again the chain is interrupted by hills and river valleys. In the north, the Ramelau Mountains go into the Aileu chain and finally the mountain range of the coastal mountains, which drop steeply into the sea.
