The Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão ( Portuguese Parque Nacional Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão ) is East Timor's second national park . It is located inland, south of the state capital Dili and is named after the freedom fighter and politician Xanana Gusmão . The area was a retreat for the FALINTIL independence fighters in the fight against the Indonesian occupiers.
background
The national park lies in the border area of the two communities Ainaro and Manufahi , in the Sucos Leolima , Mauchiga , Soro , Grotu , Rotuto , Dai-Sua , Letefoho and Holarua . The city of Same is to the east and the city of Ainaro to the west . The national park has an area of 123.23 km². The mountain Cablac ( 2180 m ) also belongs to the protected area .
In 2000 UNTAET founded 15 protected natural areas (PNA ). Including the area of today's national park. The wildlife sanctuaries remained in the independent East Timor . On October 20, 2015, the East Timorese government decided to establish the national park. On October 24, the official inauguration was celebrated at the site of the former guerrilla camp of Xanana Gusmão. An interview with Gusmãos by the Australian journalist Robert Domm of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) took place here on October 21, 1990 . It was the first interview with a leader of the FALINTIL armed resistance against the Indonesian occupation of East Timor. With the establishment of the national park, the 25th anniversary of the event was celebrated.
According to Prime Minister Rui Maria de Araújo in his celebratory speech, the place where Gusmão and Domm meet should be considered sacred ( Tara Bandu ). The national park symbolizes the resistance, deeds and sacrifices of men in battle, in diplomacy and in the underground.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is responsible for the national park. Three places in the park should be highlighted: the hiding place of Xanana Gusmão in the area of Ai-Dila-Okir , the place of the first interview and the place where the flag of the FALINTIL was designed.
