Ramin Karimloo (born September 19, 1978 in Iran ) is an Iranian-Canadian musical performer who is best known for his work in London's West End . He had leading roles in the two longest running musicals there: The Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables . He is also part of the original cast of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Love Never Dies .

Career

Ramin Karimloo graduated from Alexander Mackenzie High School in Richmond Hill, Canada . His career as a singer and actor began in rock bands and various theater projects; later he also appeared in theater groups.

After moving to England , he got his first role in a pantomime version of Aladdin in Chatham . In 2001 he took part in a British tour of The Pirates of Penzance , where he played the role of the pirate king, although he had only been the understudy at the beginning.

In 2002 Karimloo was a member of an ensemble on Sunset Boulevard , where he played Artie Green and also played the role of Joe Gillis. Les Misérables made his debut at the West End Theater in London; he played Feuilly and was a replacement for the roles of Marius and Enjolras.

Karimloo then took on the role of Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera . His last matinee performance was filmed and used as an extra on the DVD of Joel Schumacher's film The Phantom of the Opera . He also had a cameo in the film as Gustave Daaé, Christine's father.

At the same time Karimloo appeared in two concerts by Les Misérables (as Marius) and in a concert by Jesus Christ Superstar (as Simon Zelotes ). In 2004 he temporarily returned to Les Misérables , this time in the role of Enjolras. In December of that year he appeared in a concert by Les Misérables at Windsor Castle in honor of French President Jacques Chirac . He also played Marius, also in 2004, at Powderham Castle.

In June 2005 Karimloo went on tour with Miss Saigon , here in the role of Christopher Scott. In September 2007 he returned to London's West End with The Phantom of the Opera , this time as Phantom.

Karimloo also released an EP, Within the Six Square Inch , on which he sings with Hadley Fraser and Sophia Ragavelas. He had already played with both of them at Les Misérables .

In 2008 Karimloo recorded a song, I Only Wish for You , with Shona Lindsay and Dianne Pilkington , which appeared on the CD Songs from the Musicals of Alexander S. Bermange .

In 2009 he was involved in the recording of the musical Bluebird by Gareth Peter Dicks, which is set in World War II. Karimloo sang the US soldier Ben Breagan.

Karimloo's last regular performance in The Phantom of the Opera was on November 7, 2009. He then played the Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber's own sequel, Love Never Dies, alongside Sierra Boggess until production ended on August 27, 2011.

On October 3, 2010, Karimloo played the role of Enjolras in the 25th anniversary concert of Les Misérables at The O2 in London. On October 1 and 2, 2011 he appeared again as Phantom at the side of Love Never Dies co-star Boggess ( Christine Daaé ) in the anniversary performance of The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall . Both productions were released on DVD .

From November 29, 2011 to March 31, 2012 he returned as Jean Valjean to Les Miserables at London's Queen's Theater . He also played this role in a production of the musical in Toronto in winter 2013.

His first solo album, Ramin , was released by Sony Music Entertainment on April 9, 2012 in the UK and August 2012 in Canada and the USA.

Prices

Broadwayworld.com named Karimloo Best Actor for his portrayal of the Phantom in Love Never Dies . On February 7, 2011, he received a nomination for the Laurence Olivier Award .
