Love never dies (Original title: Love never dies ) is a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics by Glenn Slater and Charles Hart . The libretto  is by Webber, Slater and Ben Elton . Love never dies is a possible continuation of the musical The Phantom of the Opera . The composition of the musical is independent, but always draws on quotations from the Phantom of the Opera. The plot revolves around the same characters, but no longer corresponds to the novel by Gaston Leroux . Instead, it uses ideas from Frederick Forsyth's story The Phantom of Manhattan .

In 1907, ten years after the events in Paris (which actually took place as early as 1881), Christine Daaé traveled to Coney Island with her husband Raoul and their son Gustave for an engagement . To her surprise, she meets the Phantom there, who now runs an amusement park called “Phantasma” and Christine under the code name “Mr. Y "has engaged. Madame Giry and her daughter Meg, who work for the Phantom, react to his still existing love for Christine with incomprehension and jealousy. While Meg vies for the phantom's favor and Raoul struggles with his alcoholism , Christine and the phantom indulge in romantic memories of their time in Paris. Gustave plays a key role as the conflicts of interest escalate.

Love Never Dies premiered on March 9, 2010 at the Adelphi Theater in London's West End . The show could be seen there until August 27, 2011. The planned production on Broadway was canceled due to insufficient attendance in London. Since May 2011, a version of the musical has been shown in Melbourne , the film version of which has also been released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc . In the first quarter of 2012 this production was played in Sydney . The Det Ny Teater in Copenhagen performed a production in Danish from October 24, 2012 to April 21, 2013 . In October 2013 the musical was given for a short time as a concert performance at the Ronacher in Vienna . Love dies never premiered on October 15, 2015 at the Hamburg Operettenhaus , where it was performed until September 25, 2016. The main roles are played by Garðar Thór Cortes and Rachel Anne Moore . However, the show received mostly criticism from the press.

History of origin

As early as 1990, after four years of successful season of The Phantom of the Opera , Andrew Lloyd Webber developed plans for a sequel. He encouraged his friend Frederick Forsyth to write a book that would describe what happened to the Phantom after he escaped from the Paris Opera House and how the story of Christine and Raoul had developed. Forsyth eventually moved the action to Coney Island. His novel The Phantom of Manhattan was published in England in 1997 and in Germany in 2000. The plot of the musical was written in 2008 based on it by Ben Elton .

After the first version (which was published as a studio album and was initially shown in London), the work was significantly revised in terms of content and music. In addition, the London production took a short break. Some music tracks have been deleted, others have been re-recorded and the order of the tracks has changed significantly. After the London performance, there were other minor adjustments and cuts for the Australian version. The stage design has also been completely redesigned for Australia. This version was later shown at other venues (e.g. Hamburg).

Plot (original version)

1st act

Prologue : On the deserted pier of Coney Island , the disaffected Madame Giry recalls a spectacle of bygone days called "Phantasma". Fleck, one of the “ freaks ” she once worked with, appears and blames Madame Giry's “greed” for the fact that the “master disappeared with the child” and that a great fire “destroyed everything” (That's the Place That You Ruined, You Fool!) . The Coney Island Waltz transports the audience back in time.

1907: An excited group of vacationers overwhelmed the island. There is speculation about the mysterious director of the musical theater Phantasma, who wears a mask and says “Mr. Y " (Heaven by the Sea) . Meg Giry, Christine Daaé's former friend from the Paris Opera , is Phantasma's main attraction. Her mother and agent, Madame Giry, directs the ballet . Most of all, Meg is keen to please Mr. Y (Only for Him / Only for You) with her performances . After the performance, she meets an “admirer” whom her mother introduces to her.

In his tower high above Phantasm, Mr. Y reveals himself to the audience as the Phantom (The Aerie) . An automat that looks like Christine and all sorts of other whimsical furnishings adorn his refuge . Still - despite ten years of separation and professional success - it is his greatest wish to be reunited with Christine ('Til I Hear You Sing) . Meg bursts in and wants to be praised for her performance, but experiences an unwilling rebuff. Madame Giry is upset that, despite all the help she and Meg have given the Phantom over the years, she still only wants Christine (Giry Confronts the Phantom / 'Til I Hear You Sing (Reprise)) . She recalls that she and Meg once helped him escape Paris and flee to America by ship. The Phantom is unfazed and instructs its misshapen servants Fleck, Squelch and Gangle to invite Christine to appear in Phantasma.

Three months later, Christine, Raoul, and their son Gustave arrive in New York City . A crowd of photographers and journalists awaits them (Christine Disembarks) . It turns out that despite her fame, Christine no longer performs and that Raoul has become a gambler and a drunkard . The freaks appear out of nowhere for a strange greeting and bring the family to Coney Island (Arrival of the Trio / Are You Ready to Begin?) . Raoul is outraged by the way she was received. Angry, he rejects Gustave, who wants to play with him (What a Dreadful Town!) . Christine refers to her fee , which was the reason for accepting the invitation. She asks her husband to stop drinking, but he leaves the room. Christine comforts Gustave by asking him to "see with the heart" and to understand the father in this way (Look with Your Heart) .

After Gustave went to bed, the phantom appears and reveals himself to Christine as the sender of the invitation. They both remember a passionate night they spent together before Christine's wedding (Beneath a Moonless Sky) . Christine woke up early the next morning with the intention of leaving Raoul for the Phantom. The fact that the phantom had disappeared, however, she interpreted as a rejection and married Raoul. The phantom admits that it left her at the time for fear of renewed rejection. Both agree that their love would have had a chance if the circumstances at the time hadn't prevented it (Once upon Another Time) . Gustave wakes up from a nightmare screaming and for the first time meets “Mr. Y " (Mother Please, I'm Scared!) . The Phantom promises Gustave to show him more of Phantasm the next day.

At a rehearsal, Meg unexpectedly meets Christine. She is surprised and jealous that Christine will sing in phantasm. At the same time Raoul meets Madame Giry and learns from her the true identity of Mr. Y (Dear Old Friend) . When Gustave suddenly disappears, Christine becomes suspicious. The freaks took him to the Phantom, where Gustave plays a fascinating melody on the piano that he made up himself. Impressed by the boy's unexpected musicality, a suspicion grows in the phantom: it is Gustave's father (Beautiful) himself . Both discover their kinship ; they share a fascination with “beauty beneath the surface” (The Beauty Underneath) . In the firm belief that Gustave will accept him, the phantom unmasked. Gustave responds with a shocked cry.

Christine enters and calms her troubled son down. When the phantom confronts her with his discovery, Christine confesses his paternity to him. Out of consideration for Raoul, she couldn't tell him about it earlier (The Phantom Confronts Christine) . The phantom declares that all of his possessions should one day belong to Gustave. Madame Giry overheard the conversation. Suddenly she curses the situation that thwarted her and Meg's plans.

2nd act

After the entr'acte the perspective changes to Raoul. In the early hours of the morning after a night at the bar, he no longer finds anything lovable about himself (Why Does She Love Me?) . Meg enters the scene and recommends Raoul to leave Coney Island that night with Christine and Gustave. Raoul refuses; he is not afraid of his former opponent. The phantom unexpectedly reveals itself in the form of the bartender and wrestles an agreement from the drunk Raoul: If Christine appears as planned, Raoul has to leave the island alone. If she doesn't sing, the phantom will pay off all of the couple's debts. The phantom indicates which of them is Gustave's real father, and it plunges Raoul into even deeper despair (Devil Take the Hindmost) .

The last day of the season is celebrated on the beach (Heaven by the Sea (Reprise)) . The freaks land with a hot air balloon and advertise the performance of the coming night (Ladies ... Gents! / The Coney Island Waltz (recapitulation)) .

The decisive performance in Phantasma takes place: Christine Daaé is announced as the star of the evening. First, Meg and the "Ooh La La Girls" open the revue with a striptease (Bathing Beauty) . Meg expects this to get the phantom's long-awaited attention. When her mother tells her about his absence after the performance, Meg breaks into a crying fit. Madame Giry sums up her view of the situation: Both of you were "replaced" (Mother, Did You Watch?) .

Before Christine's appearance, Raoul pleads with his wife not to sing and instead leave the island with him if she loves him (Before the Performance) . When Raoul leaves, the phantom enters the room and asks Christine to “release the music within” in order to finally realize itself. Christine remembers the Paris Opera, where she once made an equally difficult decision between Raoul and the Phantom. Meanwhile, Madame Giry, Raoul and the Phantom wonder whether Christine will sing or not (Devil Take the Hindmost (Reprise)) . Christine finally enters the stage and sings an aria about the immortality of love (Love Never Dies) . Raoul leaves the theater disillusioned.

After her appearance, Christine receives stormy applause, especially from the Phantom (Ah, Christine!) . In her dressing room she finds a letter from Raoul in which he hands her over to the phantom. Suddenly she notices that Gustave has been missing for some time (Gustave! Gustave!) . The phantom suspects that Madame Giry kidnapped the boy, but she indignantly rejects the accusation. Fleck watched Meg leave the theater with a small person. Madame Giry senses Meg's plan and leads the search party to the pier.

Meg is as if by all senses and ready to drown Gustave (Please Miss Giry, I Want to Go Back) when she is surprised by the others. She points a gun at the phantom so that it can finally listen to her. Frustrated, she reveals a terrible truth: Meg earned the money with which the phantom created phantasm as a prostitute . The phantom's attention was only ever heard from Christine. The phantom feels remorse and realizes in Meg's "invisibility" his own fate. Carefully she wants to take the gun from Meg, but in the general confusion a shot is released that hits Christine. Meg wakes up from her trance , horrified by her own act. The fatally injured Christine reveals to Gustave that the Phantom is his real father. When Gustave finds out, he runs away. She assures the phantom of her undying love. They kiss one last time when Christine dies in his arms. Gustave returns with Raoul. The phantom gives Christine's body to Raoul to comfort Gustave. The boy finally takes off the mask and looks at his face, now without a trace of fear.
