Ramiro III. (León)
Ramiro III. (* 961 ; † 985 ) was the son of King Sancho I of León and his successor as King of León (966–984).
He became king at the age of five. During his youth, the government was in the hands of his aunt Elvira Ramírez , who assumed the title of king for the time, and his mother, Teresa Ansúrez , who had to enter a monastery when her husband died. His reign was thus also characterized by a church-friendly policy.
During his reign as a youth, he signed a peace agreement with the caliph Al-Hakam II and fought the Vikings who had invaded Galicia .
After he came of age, he married in 983 Sancha , daughter of the Count of Saladana Gomez , with whom he had no children.
Ramiro tried to establish an absolutist monarchy and thereby only strengthened the separatist tendencies in Galicia and Castile . Therefore and because of constant raids by the Moors , Galician nobles called Bermudo II in 982 , the son of Ordoño III. , to the King of Galicia. Ramiro lost his throne to Bermudo II in 984.
