Rampart (computer game)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rampart is an arcade game that was produced by Atari Games in 1990. It was first ported to Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991 , then to Amiga 500 , Amiga 600 , Atari Lynx , Atari ST , Commodore C64 , Super Nintendo Entertainment System and MS-DOS in 1992 . In 2007 a version for the PlayStation Network was released, in which up to four players can play against each other online.

Gameplay

The game is played in the 2D top view . The computer opponent begins his attack at sea, while the player has to defend his castles on land against the attacking enemy troops.

The computer opponent has ships that shoot at the castle walls and destroy them. When the ships reach the coast, units land on land and advance towards the player's castles and cannons, trying to destroy them.

The player, on the other hand, has one or more castles that are surrounded by walls. Within the walls, which form a closed area, the player can set up cannons that he fires at the ships and troops of the enemy.

The game is turn-based: First, both sides fire at each other. In the second round the player tries to rebuild the destroyed walls. To do this, the computer offers him “spare parts” that he has to place on the chessboard- like playing field. He has to consider a few points. The more castles the player successfully encloses, the more cannons can be set up. However, he must also observe the time limit. If it cannot form a closed surface with the walls that offers enough space for a cannon, then it also has no cannons for defense. If he cannot surround any of his castles with walls, he has lost the game. The spare parts with which the player can repair the walls also become more complicated over time. While 1x1, 1x2 or 1x3 field large spare parts are offered at the beginning, S, L, T or U-shaped parts are offered later that do not fit into every gap in the wall. This section of the game is therefore reminiscent of the game Tetris . Furthermore, the player cannot put walls on enemy troops or on burning surfaces (some ships fire incendiary devices). After this round, the player can then set up cannons within the walls. The larger the closed area that the player could form, the more cannons he can place. In some ports there is the possibility of three new cannons (the player gets if he encloses at least two castles) to build a super cannon, which then shoots burning bullets, or a propaganda balloon, which influences an enemy ship, so that this is on the side of the player fights.

The process described takes several rounds until the player has survived several waves of attack.

The game consists of several levels . In the first level the player has a large land mass, while the opponent can only attack from one side. In the last level the player is on an island and the opponent can attack from all four directions.

The game can also be played in multiplayer mode with up to three players. The attack by the computer from the sea is no longer necessary. The players attack each other.
