The Ramu rainbow fish ( Glossolepis ramuensis ) is a freshwater fish from northern Papua New Guinea . It was first collected in 1983 and scientifically described by the Australian ichthyologist Allen in 1985 .

female

features

The males of the Ramu rainbow fish are greenish-brown to purple in color on the back and whitish or mauve on the belly with black spots. They have several thin horizontal yellowish-orange lines on the side, which are most vividly colored in the midsection and end of the body. Adult males are larger and higher back than the paler, predominantly gold-yellow colored females. The male's first dorsal fin protrudes over the attachment of the second dorsal fin when put on. The species grows to about eight centimeters, rarely up to ten centimeters.

The Ramu rainbow fish, like the closely related spotted rainbow fish , is more reminiscent of species from the genus Melanotaenia than from the genus Glossolepis . Even according to genetic studies, it belongs to the genus Melanotaenia with Melanotaenia affinis and Melanotaenia iris as further close relatives.

Occurrence and habitat

The species is only known from the upper reaches of the Ramu and tributaries of the Gogol , near Madang .

The habitat is rainforest streams with clear water, stony ground and very little underwater vegetation. Sometimes the Ramu rainbow fish appears together with Chilatherina campsi and Melanotaenia affinis . The temperatures are 26 to 29 ° C and the pH values are in the range from 7.4 to 7.9.
