Tino Pietrogiovanna (born December 19, 1950 in Santa Caterina Valfurva ) is a former Italian ski racer and later Italian national ski trainer.

biography

Pietrogiovanna was a member of the Italian national ski team in the first half of the 1970s. He competed in the technical disciplines of the World Cup . He scored his first points in a World Cup race on December 17, 1972 when he finished sixth in the slalom in Madonna di Campiglio . On March 23, 1973, he was third for the first time on the podium at the Heavenly Valley slalom . He achieved a second podium (3rd place) on December 18, 1974 in the giant slalom of the 3-tre races in Madonna di Campiglio.

His name is associated with the so-called Valanga azzurra , when five Italian skiers ( Piero Gros , Gustav Thöni , Erwin Stricker , Helmuth Schmalzl and Tino Pietrogiovanna) won first places in the giant slalom in Berchtesgaden on January 7, 1974, for the only time in the history of the World Cup occupied. Participation in world championships was denied to him because of the strong competition in his own team. At the end of his playing career, ten placements were among the top ten.

After his retirement he became a ski trainer. From 1978 to 1982 he coached the men's team at the Comitato Alpi Centrali. From 1982 to 1989 he was the slalom and giant slalom trainer of the Italian men's national ski team and led Alberto Tomba to the top of the world. He then took care of Deborah Compagnoni between 1989 and 1999 (part-time until 1994). From 1999 to 2005 he was Technical Director of the Italian national ski team for women.
