Randy McKean

Randy McKean is an American jazz musician ( bass clarinet , alto saxophone ) and composer.

Randy McKean studied jazz at Coe College , a. a. with Paul Smoker , where he received his bachelor's degree, then he completed his studies with a Master of Arts in composition at Mills College, where he studied with Anthony Braxton , David Rosenboom and Maggi Payne .

He then worked with the rock band Poi Dog Pondering as well as with David Rice and Teratoma; In 1990 he played in Fred Lonberg-Holm's band ( Theory of Motion ). In the early 1990s McKean was a member of Anthony Braxton's Tri-Centric Orchestra (heard on Braxton's Black Saint album Four (Ensemble) Compositions from 1992) and toured Taiwan with James Fei's alto saxophone quartet . He has also worked in the Nevada County Composers Cooperative , in the Avant-Folk Duo Sawbones with violinist Maxima Kahn and in the Duo Off Center with guitarist David Dvorin. He has also worked with Gregg Bendian , Don Byron , Mark Dresser , Kevin Norton , Gino Robair and Herb Robertson . In 1991 his first album was created under his own name on the Rastascan label , So Dig This Big Crux , on which Paul Smoker, Drew Gress and Phil Haynes participated. With the Great Circle Saxophone Quartet he also recorded the album Child King Dictator Fool (New World).

Mckean lived and worked in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City ; he now lives in Grass Valley, California .
