The Rangitikei River is one of the longest rivers in New Zealand . It rises on the North Island of New Zealand south of Lake Taupo in the Kaimanawa Ranges and flows into the Tasman Sea about 40 kilometers south of the city of Wanganui .

The river flows over 185 kilometers from the central plateau of the North Island past the towns of Taihape , Managweka, Hunterville, Marton and Bull. The river gives the Rangitikei District its name.

history

The Rangitikei River has an important meaning for the Māori . Numerous settlement areas are still located along its course today. In 1897 the Rangitikei experienced its greatest flood disaster, six bridges were washed away along its course and the port at its mouth was completely destroyed and never rebuilt.

tourism

The river is a popular vacation and recreation area for jet boat tours, rafting and fishing. The New Zealand invention of bungee jumping is offered over numerous canyons. Along its very winding course there are steeply sloping rocks on the shore, wide, seamless meadows reaching down to the water, but also dense forests.

Others

Parts of the river were used by Peter Jackson as the Anduin River in the movie Lord of the Rings (The Fellowship of the Ring) .
