Betty Smith (writer)
Betty Smith , born Elizabeth Lillian Wehner (born December 15, 1896 in Brooklyn , New York , † January 17, 1972 in Shelton , Connecticut ) was an American writer .
The first and most well-known work of Betty Smith's A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (A Tree Grows in Brooklyn) (1943), not only the American bestseller led list, but also for the Pulitzer Prize nominee. Elia Kazan filmed the book in 1945 , the film of the same name received an Oscar for James Dunn for Best Supporting Actor and a Juvenile Award (youth Oscar , which has only been awarded twelve times in film history) for Peggy Ann Garner . In 1951 a stage version was created that was performed on Broadway . The book was first published in German in 1947. Other successful novels by Betty Smith are Tomorrow will be better (1947), Maggie-Now (1949) and Joy in the Morning (1963). Each of these books reached the top ten of the American book bestseller list.
Betty Smith's parents, John Wehner and Kate Hummel, were both children of German immigrants.
