Raniero Cantalamessa OFMCap (born July 22, 1934 in Colli del Tronto ) is an Italian Capuchin friar, Catholic theologian and professor of church history and patristicism . He is the official preacher of the papal house .

Life

Raniero Cantalamessa entered the Capuchin order and was ordained a priest in 1958 . At the Swiss University of Freiburg , he became the doctor of theology doctorate . He then received his doctorate in Classical Philology from the Catholic University of Sacro Cuore (Milan) . Cantalamessa taught after studying in Milan as a full professor of ancient church history and patristics and was there also head of the department for religious studies at the Catholic University. In 1975 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. Appointed to the international theological commission, of which he was a member until 1981.

In 1980 he was appointed preacher of the papal house. He has exercised this function since then and holds a spiritual lecture every week in Advent and Lent for the Pope, the cardinals, bishops and superiors general of the religious orders.

Cantalamessa has written several books translated into 15 languages. From 1994 to 2010 Cantalamessa hosted a fifteen-minute program on the Sunday Gospel every Saturday on the Italian television station Rai Uno .
