The Raninidae are a family of native crabs (Brachyura). In contrast to most other crabs, the greatly reduced abdomen has not folded under the cephalothorax . The scissor bones of the Raninidae and the front three pairs of legs have developed into digging tools with which the animals dig themselves in the sand.

There are over 30 recent species, all of which live in the sand on tropical seashores.

The Raninidae have been known to be fossilized since the Lower Cretaceous Period . In the Tertiary they were very common.
