Ranunculus alismifolius is a species of the buttercup family.

description

The stems are erect or ascending and hairless or hirsute. They are not rooted in the nodes . The roots are hairless and thin or thickened like a spindle at their base. The leaf blades of the basal sheets are pointed at their base. The lower stem leaves are 1.8 to 14.1 × 0.7 to 2.9 centimeters in size, lanceolate, egg-shaped or elliptical, with entire or finely serrated margins, pointed to rounded at the base and blunt to pointed at the end of the leaf. The bracts are lanceolate. The prescription is hairless. The 5 sepals are 2 to 6 × 1 to 4 millimeters in size, hairless or wire-haired and spread out or bent at the base. The 5 to 12 petals are 5 to 14 × 2 to 8 millimeters in size. The nectar scales are hairless. The heads of the achenes are 3 to 7 × 4 to 8 millimeters in size and hemispherical or spherical. The achenes are hairless or slightly rough-haired and 1.6 to 2.8 × 1.2 to 2 millimeters in size. The beak is 0.4 to 1.2 millimeters in size, sublet and straight to slightly curved.

Occurrence

Ranunculus alismifolius occurs in North America.

Systematics

Ranunculus alismifolius was first described by George Bentham in 1849 . There are six varieties:

  • Ranunculus alismifolius var. Alismellus A. Gray
The stem is 6 to 21 inches long and 1 to 3 millimeters wide and hairless. The roots are not thickened or slightly fusiform at the base. The petiole is hairless. The leaf blade is 1.8 to 4.8 × 0.7 to 1.6 centimeters, oval to elliptical and entire. The 5, rarely up to 8 petals are 5 to 8 × 2 to 6 millimeters in size. The flowering period extends from May to August. The variety occurs in the United States in California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon and Washington and in Mexico in Baja California. It grows on moist grassland, forests and rivers at altitudes of 1400 to 3600 meters.
  • Ranunculus alismifolius var. Alismifolius
The stems are 20 to 70 centimeters long, 3.5 to 8 millimeters wide and hairless. The roots are not thickened in a spindle-shaped manner or are hardly thickened at the base. The petioles are hairless. The leaf blade is 5.8 to 14.1 × 1.2 to 2.9 inches in size and lanceolate. The leaf base is pointed to sometimes pointed, the leaf margins are finely serrated. The 4 to 6 petals are 7 to 11 × 4 to 8 millimeters in size. The flowering period extends from April to June. The variety occurs in Canada in British Columbia on south Vancouver Island and in the USA in California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. It grows in moist grassland, wetlands and shallow water areas in flowing and standing water at altitudes from 0 to 1700 meters.
  • Ranunculus alismifolius var. Davisii L.D. Benson
The stems are 13 to 32 centimeters long, 1 to 2 millimeters wide and hairless or wire-haired. The roots are fusiformly thickened at the base. The petioles are hairless or curly haired. The leaf blade is 3.5 to 7.2 × 0.5 to 1.6 inches in size, wide to narrowly lanceolate and with entire margins. The leaf base is broadly pointed. The 5 to 6 petals are 5 to 7 × 3 to 6 millimeters in size. The flowering period extends from June to August. The variety is found in Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, and Wyoming. It grows in grassland and wetlands at altitudes of 1,300 to 2,600 meters.
  • Ranunculus alismifolius var. Hartwegii (Greene) Jepson
The stems are 13 to 30 centimeters long, 1 to 3 millimeters wide and hairless. The roots are not or hardly thickened spindle-shaped at the base. The petioles are hairless. The leaf blade is 3.4 to 9.5 × 0.8 to 1.5 centimeters, lanceolate and with entire margins. The leaf base is pointed to pointed, sometimes blunt. The 5 to 6 petals are 6 to 8 × 3 to 5 millimeters in size. The flowering period extends from May to August. The variety is found in California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming. It grows in grassland, open embankments and the banks of rivers at altitudes of 1400 to 2600 meters.
  • Ranunculus alismifolius var. Lemmonii (A. Gray) LD Benson
The stems are 7 to 35 inches long, 1 to 3 millimeters wide and hairless or finely haired. The roots are often clearly thickened spindle-shaped at the base. The petioles are hairless or fine-haired. The leaf blade is 2.7 to 10.8 × 0.6 to 1.3 centimeters, narrowly lanceolate and with entire margins. The base of the leaf is pointed. The 5 to 6, rarely up to 8 petals are 10 to 14 × 5 to 8, rarely from 3 millimeters in size. The flowering period extends from May to July. The variety occurs in California and Nevada and is endemic there in the Sierra Nevada . It grows in grassland at altitudes of 1400 to 2900 meters.
  • Ranunculus alismifolius var. Montanus S. Watson
The stems are 15 to 40 centimeters long, 2 to 7 millimeters wide and hairless. The roots are more or less spindle-shaped thickened at the base. The petioles are hairless. The leaf blade is 2.4 to 9.7 × 0.9 to 2.2 centimeters in size, lanceolate to narrowly ovate or elliptical and entire or very rarely finely serrate. The leaf base is pointed or rounded blunt. The mostly 7 to 12, rarely only 5 or 6 petals are 5 to 9 × 2 to 3 millimeters in size. The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16. The flowering period extends from May to August. The variety occurs in Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming. It grows in moist grassland and on the banks of rivers at altitudes of 1,800 to 3,500 meters.
