Ranya Paasonen (* 9. January 1974 in Chennai , India as Ranya ElRamly ) is a Finnish writer .

Life

Ranya Paasonen is the daughter of an Egyptian and a Finnish woman. You were born in the Indian metropolis of Chennai. She grew up in Egypt , India , Chad , Saudi Arabia and Libya . She has lived in Helsinki since 1987 . After graduating from school, she began studying Semitic Languages ​​at the University of Helsinki , which she successfully completed in 1995 with a master's degree.

Paasonen debuted as a writer with Auringon asema in 2002. The autobiographically inspired novel tells the love story of an Egyptian and a Finnish woman who get to know each other during a train ride from Luxor to Aswan . It is loosely based on the events of her parents' youth. The book was well received by Finnish literary critics and was awarded the Kalevi Jäntti Prize in 2002 and the Runeberg Prize and the Thank You for the Book Medal in 2003. The book has been translated into several languages, including Norwegian, Latvian, Polish and Swedish. After a translation by Stefan Moster , the book was published in German by Deutsches Taschenbuch Verlag in 2004 under the title Der Stand der Sonne .

Ranya Paasonen is married to the Finnish poet Markku Paasonen . Both live in Helsinki .
