From 1582 there is a document which identifies Räpina and many neighboring towns as a trading post in the Tartu region. Presumably these settlements joined together to form the parish Räpina, which was mentioned as a parish in a document of the Swedish Royal Consistory in 1636 .
Between the 1930s and 1992 the rural community Räpina belonged to the ESSR . With the state independence of Estonia, Räpina finally achieved the status of a self-governing city . In 2002, the city and the municipality of Räpina merged and formed what is now the municipality of Räpina.
The inhabitants of Räpina operated and operated agriculture, fishing and wood processing.
