Raquel Cardeira Vieira (* 1978 ) is a Portuguese historian , university professor and author. She is known to the wider public in Portugal as both an author and a regular commentator and panelist on the Portuguese public television, RTP . Her main research interests are wage labor and related topics.

Scientific work

She teaches and researches at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa , where they face a thesis on the role of the Communist Party of Portugal in the Carnation Revolution doctorate was (2011 at Editora Bertrand published as a book).

She was visiting professor at the Universidade Federal Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro and is a fellow at the International Institute for Social History in Amsterdam , where she also worked on the international project In The Same Boat? Shipbuilding industry, a global labor history coordinates.

In 2013 she received the Santander Prize for Internationalization of Scientific Production , in 2014 she was scientific advisor for the official commemorations of the 40th anniversary of the Portuguese Carnation Revolution. She is also an invited guest author at Pluto Press, a London publisher devoted to international workers' history.

Varela has written or coordinated over 25 books on topics such as Portuguese social security , sociological history, trade unions, topics in political science or the Carnation Revolution , plus over 50 articles in historical, sociological, political and social science publications (as of March 2020).

Varela can be seen more often on Portuguese television. In addition to guest appearances as an expert or commentator on current topics or events, she can be seen above all in regular, mostly political panel discussions, predominantly on channels of the public television RTP.

She was part of the regular discussion group in the series Barca do Inferno (Eng .: Barque of Hell), in which current topics were discussed controversially and even polemically from 2014 to 2015.

Mention should also be made of the O Último Apaga a Luz ( Eng . The last one turns off the light) panel , in which she is one of the four experts who analyze current reporting in the Portuguese media landscape every Monday evening. She is also a regular guest in live broadcasts with audience participation such as Prós e Contras on RTP1.
