Von Raron was the name of a wealthy noble family in the Valais , from which five bishops descended from Sitten .

history

The von Raron family was related to the barons of Ringgenberg . The family owned property in the Raron area as early as the 12th century and named themselves after their ancestral castle there from the 13th century. Heinrich, Herr von Mannenberg, is considered to be the ancestor of the family . As victum of Leuk and Raron he was a vassal of the bishop of Sitten. His sons Amadeus, Johannes and Ulrich founded three lines, their brother Heinrich became Bishop of Sitten.

Andreas received Mannenberg, his descendants acquired property in Visp and the manor villa in Val d'Hérens . The Sion Bishop Wilhelm III came from this sideline . A Johannes acquired Bern citizenship in 1337 . This branch of the family died out in the 15th century.

Johannes received the ancestral castle and the vice dominate Raron. Of his sons, Heinrich became Bishop of Sitten and Rudolf acquired the vice-dominate Sitten. This branch became extinct in 1303.

Ulrich received the vice-dominate Leuk and the rule of wood. His descendant Peter received numerous offices and fiefs as an ally of Bishop Witschard Tavel . By marriage he acquired Beauregard Castle in the Val d'Anniviers and in Conthey , Niedergesteln and the Vispertal estates belonging to the Lords of Turn . Peter's sons were Wilhelm I , Bishop of Sitten, and Witschard von Raron , Governor of Sitten . Witschard's sons Hildebrand and Petermann von Raron died without leaving any descendants, so this line also became extinct.
