Drill rasp with a diameter of 5 mm

The rasp is a tool for machining relatively soft materials such as wood , plastic , horn or soft stone . The rasp teeth (blows) of the hardened steel rasp protrude from the blade. They therefore tear chips out of the material during the cutting movement . The remaining deep traces in the surface can z. B. be smoothed with a file . Due to the considerably larger teeth, a rasp removes much more material than a file.

Rasps are also used in sculpture to work on soft stones such as soapstone , alabaster , limestone or marble . Due to the high level of wear and tear on conventional rasps when processing medium-hard rocks such as limestone, rasps are also available in which the teeth are not hammered into the rasp body, but are formed by hard metal splinters applied to the rasp body.

The drill rasp , also called stickleback or drill saw, is a special form. The tip is worked like a wooden hand drill. With the rasp part of the tool behind it, the drill hole can be enlarged after drilling through the workpiece. Furthermore, particularly coarse rasps are used by farriers for the care of animal hooves , for example horses. Rasps without a handle (wooden or plastic handle), but with a handle in the middle, between two ends designed as rasps, for the hand in metal, are called corrugated or sculptor rasps. For personal hygiene there are corneal rasps and files.
