The Thedinghausen town hall was originally built in the 13th century in the historical and still present town center of Thedinghausen . It was originally called Poggenburg , which stands for Krötenburg . Contrary to what the name suggests, the town hall was never built as a castle, but was a courtyard with fortifications .

history

The Poggenburg was subordinate to Thedinghausen Castle, built by Archbishop Giselbert von Bremen in 1285, and has been used as an official residence since 1580 with interruptions.

From 1721 on, nobleman Friedrich Andreas Scheele was the owner, who presumably used the estate for agricultural purposes. In 1769 the Lunser pastor Johann Heinrich Gudewill bought the property. His son Johann Daniel Heinrich Gudewill converted the estate into a trading yard. The trade in linen , tobacco , money transactions and much more flourished. In the course of economic success, the ensemble was expanded to include the packing house , the barn and the manor house around 1800 . In 1840 the Handelshof was liquidated due to a lack of direct heirs and the Poggenburg fell to the Grimm family. In memory of the Gudewill era, the Thedinghausen Oberschule was named after the family.

During the revolution of 1848 , the Brunswick government ordered the arming of the people under the leadership of the bailiff Lüders. A flag donated by the ladies in the entrance hall of the town hall still reminds of this today.

The inscription " The secret of redemption lies in memory. Dedicated to our former Jewish fellow citizens " on the pigeon tree reminds of the former Jewish life in Thedinghausen.
