Cuxhaven town hall
The town hall of Cuxhaven in Cuxhaven , Rathausplatz 1, is an old building under the protection of monuments in Lower Saxony and is included in the list of architectural monuments in Cuxhaven .
history
In 1907 Cuxhaven became a city after the merger of Cuxhaven with Döse . The first elected mayor, Max Bleicken , had his seat in the Umland'schen Haus , Deichstrasse 1 on Kaemmererplatz, which was now called the mayor 's house. The parish office had been here since 1898. The community meetings took place in the Hotel Feldhusen (later the location of Karstadt and Hertie) and from 1909 in a meeting room in the Küverschule in Friedrichstrasse. In 1915 it was decided to build a town hall for the administration and council meetings of the rapidly growing city with over 15,000 inhabitants.
In 1917, the two-storey, clinkered, representative town hall was inaugurated. The building was given a three-storey octagonal central building with an entrance and a conference room as well as the two side wings with the converted attic under a hipped roof . The boardroom with paneled walls has chairs as a gift from the Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
The three coats of arms above the entrance date from 1927 and show the Hamburg city arms, the Cuxhaven city arms and the imperial or later the federal eagle.
In 1931 the three-storey extension was added in the south.
In 1935, on the occasion of a renovation in the meeting room, the 1.70 m steering wheel of the steamer Volos of the Levante Line was hung up as lighting as a gift from the HAPAG shipping company .
In 1939 the three-storey extension on Rathausstrasse followed with the striking neo-Gothic pointed arches and the open colonnade. Cuxhaven had around 32,000 inhabitants.
In 1953 the square in front of the town hall on Grüner Weg was redesigned and the stair portal changed. It was given a new railing with ironwork, designed by Hubert Grüter.
The western extension from 1973 made of prefabricated parts was demolished in 2005 and a large four-story atrium building from 2006 was built for the city with now 52,000 inhabitants.
