Rathin Kisku (born March 22, 1984 in a village in West Bengal ) is an Indian singer who belongs to the Santal ethnic group . His music style moves between Baul and traditional Santal music, which earned him the nickname adivasi Baul . He is best known in West Bengal for his live performances, but has also been seen repeatedly on television or heard in various radio programs and has published several CDs and videos.

life and work

Rathin Kisku was born in a small Santal village near Santiniketan . This area is shaped by the influence of Rabindranath Tagore , who lived in Santiniketan for a long time. His former home is now a museum and a tourist attraction. Santinitekan is also considered to be one of the centers of construction. During his school days, Rathin Kisku often took part in local cultural events. He dropped out of school at first without a degree, but was able to receive a vocal training in classical Hindustani singing and later made up his school-leaving certificate. Rathin Kisku released his first CD in 2007 through the Goethe-Institut in Calcutta . Before that he was the main singer on the CD Santal Songs of Santiniketan , released by the Ghosaldanga Bishnubati Adibasi Trust . Rathin Kisku released further CDs with the Indian music publisher Saregama .

He became known in Europe in 2005 through an appearance on ARTE . In 2005 and 2008 he went on concert tours through Germany and Austria with the support of Martin Kämpchen . On the first of these trips he also appeared on Swiss radio DRS 2 . In 2007 the singer went on a concert tour to Bangladesh , where he performed with Anusheh in Dhaka, among others . This concert tour was in turn supported by the Goethe Institute. In 2008 he was the star of the evening at the first Santhali Filmfare Awards . Rathin Kisku has appeared repeatedly on Indian radio and television programs. The singer is married and lives in Bolpur .

With his fusion of traditional Santal music with more mainstream Indian styles of music, Rathin Kisku is considered an example of a modern young Santal man who balances tradition with the demands of today and thus serves as a role model.
