Mumtaz Qadri

Mumtaz Qadri (born 1985 in Rawalpindi ; died February 29, 2016 there ) was the murderer of Salman Taseer , governor of Punjab . Qadri was a commander of the elite police force and, at the time of the murder, a member of the group of bodyguards protecting Salman Taseer. Qadri was a supporter of the Barelwī movement .

Life

Mumtaz Qadri was born in Rawalpindi, Punjab in 1985. Qadri was the son of a greengrocer in Muslim Town, Rawalpindi. Mumtaz Qadri found a job with the Punjab police in 2002. He was promoted to commandant of the elite police force in 2007. He married in 2009 and has one son. He was named as the bodyguard of Salmaan Taseer in 2010. Salman Taseer was in town with Qadri in 2011 when he was shot by Qadri. Mumtaz Qadri fired 28 shots at Taseer. Qadri let himself be arrested after the murder without resistance. The motive for the murder was that Taseer spoke out in favor of the release and against the death penalty for Asia Bibi . Mumtaz Qadri was detained for five days. His trial began in September 2011. He confessed to the murder in court. A total of 300 lawyers volunteered to defend Qadri pro bono . His trial was moved to Adiala Prison for security reasons.

Mumtaz Qadri was found guilty on October 10, 2011 and sentenced to death . He appealed the judgment. His appeal was received on October 11, 2011. The judge said that Qadri was not authorized to vigilante justice to operate. He wasn't supposed to murder Taseer, but protect him. Qadri's appeal was denied in December 2015. Mumtaz Qadri was executed at 4:30 a.m. on February 29, 2016 in Adiala Prison.

Reactions

Many Sunni organizations called for protest against the execution of Qadri. The protests took place in Karachi , Lahore , Islamabad and Peshawar . Lawyers called a strike against the execution of Qadri. The Sunni Tehreek called for further nationwide protests. The protests brought public life to a standstill in most cities. Qadri's admiration is comparable to that of Ilm-ud-din, who murdered an accountant in 1929. The execution of Mumtaz Qadri was welcomed by Islamic clergymen.
