Council Library (Sommerhausen)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The council library in Sommerhausen , a market in the district of Würzburg ( Bavaria ), was probably founded in the 16th century. The former council library has valuable incunabula and prints from the 16th century.

history

The library was kept in the town hall of Sommerhausen since the 16th century and was forgotten at the beginning of the 17th century. It was rediscovered around 1920 by the classical philologist Hildebrecht Hommel . Today the holdings with 772 titles are safely housed in the archive room on the ground floor of the town hall.

Duration

The foundation of the library are the incunabula and early prints from the library of Carthusian Prior Georg Koberer (1480–1534), bound in 274 volumes , which he bequeathed to his home community in Sommerhausen before his death.

Almost without exception, the library contains a few incunabula and prints, most of them from the first three decades of the 16th century, in a very good state of preservation. Theology predominates ; commentaries on the Bible are the most widely represented. In addition, basic philological works and Artes literature are available. When it comes to printing locations, Basel dominates with almost a third, followed by Wittenberg , Strasbourg , Nuremberg and Augsburg .
