A room of silence is a non-denominational place of rest , contemplation and silent prayer . It is intended to give all citizens, employees, guests and city dwellers the opportunity to stop off, relax, reflect, meditate or pray. Structurally, the rooms are denominationally neutral and mostly bright.

Locations

Rooms of silence are found in places where many people travel, such as train stations , airports , universities , hospitals and other public facilities. These rooms are often operated by support groups, at train stations they are usually looked after by the local train station mission.

Exceptional locations of these facilities are e.g. B. in the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin , in the Thyssenkrupp quarter in Essen and in the functional building of the Thuringian Parliament in Erfurt . In the Reichstag building in Berlin there is a prayer room for the members of the German Bundestag and employees .

Other examples are the Glattzentrum , a shopping center in Switzerland, or the information center on the exhibition grounds of Deutsche Messe AG in Hanover.

Problems

In some universities there have been difficulties in the recent past due to intentional gender segregation by representatives of the Muslim faith. So in the University of Frankfurt , the University of Hanover and the University of Hamburg . At the TU Dortmund , the ongoing conflicts led to the closure of the rooms, also at the TU Berlin .
