Space city model

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The spatial city model is a three-dimensional representation of Berlin on a scale of 1: 5000, in which free and unused areas of the city (voids) are recorded and should therefore serve as the development basis for the International Building Exhibition (IBA) 2020.

concept

The spatial city model was created on the initiative of a Prae-IBA team and the Berlin Senate Building Director, Regula Lüscher . The team's task is to prepare another IBA in Berlin. By May 2011, seven students of architecture and urban design at the Technical University of Berlin had created a model of the city that was around 9 meters wide and around 7.6 meters long. A high-resolution aerial photo was applied to the area of around 68.4 m² created in this way . The more than 1,000 voids recorded by more than 50 students from 10 countries between April and May 2011 are marked on the card with different colors and transparencies. Empty buildings are designed as blue cubes . Areas with a silver foil mark properties that belong to the Berlin vacancy management . Golden areas are leftover spaces such as median strips or areas under railway lines and motorways. A transparent foil shimmering in rainbow colors shows fallow land .

The model is built up in individual components and can be broken down into the 12 districts of Berlin . Depending on the exhibition situation, the entire city or just individual parts can be shown. The model was on display from August 12 to October 31, 2011 in the Senate Department for Urban Development in Berlin.

The aim of the spatial city model is to give the resource “space” a “fact-based visualization”. By mapping the city's diverse spatial potentials , the space for imagination and phantasy for the future of the city opens up at the same time . "

Embedding the model in the IBA

The plans for the IBA 2020 are based on three subject areas: capital city, instant city and spatial city. The capital describes Berlin as “Germany's showcase”. The aim is to show the residents and visitors of Berlin a “social draft of an urban democratic society”. In the Berlin of the 21st century, according to the organizers, “context and support will be lived across social and ethnic boundaries […] and, for example, neighborhood help [by] the extended family” will be replaced. The Sofortstadt describes Berlin as a “capital of temporary use”, in which temporary projects offer the opportunity to try out architectural projects for a while. The spatial city is the third element of this strategy, which is intended to provide a basis for decisions about which areas should be built on and which should be kept free.
