The Rautal in the Closewitz Forest is best known for its great occurrence of winter lumps , whose sea of flowers heralds spring every year in February. The area on which these early bloomers grow is protected by the area natural monument "Winterling - Edellaubholzwald". The area natural monument has a size of approx. 4.5 hectares .

The forest is made up of the tree species sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus), Norway maple (Acer platanoides), ash (Fraxinus excelsior), summer linden (Tilia platyphyllos) and common beech (Fagus sylvatica). There is also a pedunculate oak (Quercus robur) on the upper slope of the protected area .

History and development of the winterling population

First winterlings in the upper Rautal

In the 17th century, the Winterling found its way into the then adjacent Jenas vineyards together with southern vines. This was first mentioned in 1803. Due to the favorable climate of the Jena valley basin and the near-natural composition of the forest, its natural expansion was and is being promoted. While the area on which the winterling grows was 0.2 hectares in 1960, it has now grown to over one hectare.

Other early bloomers that grow in the Rautal are u. a. Smelly hellebore , liverwort and the little snowdrop .
