Friedrich Daniel Wilhelm von Irwing
Friedrich Daniel Wilhelm von Irwing (born January 8, 1740 in Tilsit ; † December 12, 1820 there ) was a Prussian major general and chief of the Dragoon Regiment No. 3 .
Life
origin
He comes from the old Irwing merchant family. She comes from Scotland and came to Prussia with the Teutonic Order . His father was Ephraim von Irwing (* 1735, † February 15, 1786), preacher in the Reformed Church of Tilsit. Major General Johann Ephraim Christian Ernst von Irwing was his brother, the philosopher Karl Franz von Irwing his uncle.
Military career
Irwing came to the cadet institute in Berlin on July 14, 1754, and on February 28, 1757 was employed as a non-commissioned officer in Dragoon Regiment No. 3 . There he became an ensign on November 7, 1757 . During the Seven Years' War he fought in the battles of Prague , Kolin , Roßbach , Kunersdorf and the siege of Prague. At that time he became second lieutenant on March 21, 1760 .
After the war, Irwing rose to staff captain on June 5, 1775 . In the War of the Bavarian Succession he fought with Schatzlar with special distinction. On September 24, 1782 he became a captain and came as a squadron chief in the Dragoon Regiment No. 4 . There he became major on August 15, 1783 and lieutenant colonel on September 27, 1790 . In the First Coalition War , Irwing fought in the Battle of Kaiserslautern , where he received the order Pour le Mérite for his behavior . He took part in the assault on Frankfurt am Main , as well as in the battles at Limbach, Stromberg, Hornbach, Nutzweiler, Zweibrücken, Weitzenburg and Froschweiler. To this end, he was promoted to colonel on January 15, 1793 . Then Irwing received on February 6, 1797 command of the No. 4 Dragoon Regiment. On September 29, 1800, he was appointed chief of the No. 3 Dragoon Regiment. On May 20, 1801, he was promoted to major general. In the Fourth Coalition War he was leader of the Arnim Cavalry Division. He took part in the battle of Auerstedt and had to retreat to Prenzlau, where he had to surrender, after which he was made inactive. From August 10, 1807 he received half pay . On January 1, 1814, he received his retirement with a pension . He died in Tilsit on December 12, 1820.
