The Ravine Blanche is a temporary river ( Fiumara (body of water) ) on the island of La Réunion , an overseas department (département d'outre-mer) of France in the southwest of the Indian Ocean .
The river lends its name to some places along its course, such as the Ravine Blanche district of the capital Saint-Pierre (Réunion) .
geography
The river rises near the plateau Les Trous Blancs (La Plaine des Cafres) of the Forêt départemento-domaniale de la rivière de Remparts in the center of the island, on the southern slope of the eastern volcano at an altitude of approx. 1250 m . It runs over 26.1 km in a slight curve to the southwest, first through the municipality of Le Tampon , then through Saint Pierre. In the lower reaches it forms the western boundary of the Ravine Blanche district with its large social housing buildings.
The river is almost dry most of the time, but can turn into a torrent during tropical storms, such as Cyclone Gamede .
