Raymond Henry "Ray" Bateman, Jr. (born August 9, 1955 in Somerville , New Jersey , † February 1, 1990 in Bridgewater , New Jersey) was an American luge athlete .

Life

Ray Bateman studied economics at the University of Vermont , where he was also active in rugby and football. He later worked as an insurance agent in Somerville. He was also active as a racing driver and squash player. His brother Doug was also active as a luge.

Bateman competed in a two-seater with Frank Masley . Together they became national luge champions in 1980, 1983 and 1984. In 1980 they took part in the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid . There they reached 18th place. Four years later, at the 1984 Winter Games in Sarajevo , they improved to 13th place.
