Raymond Asquith, 3rd Earl of Oxford and Asquith (born August 24, 1952 ) is a British diplomat and politician .

Origin and family environment

Raymond Benedict Barthelemew Michael Asquith came from a liberal English family that was of significant political influence, especially in the 20th century. His great-grandfather Herbert Henry Asquith (1852-1928) was not only Prime Minister of Great Britain and bearer of the Order of the Garter , but was also given the hereditary title of Earl of Oxford and Asquith on February 9, 1926 (along with the title of Viscount) because of his services Asquith) awarded. He himself was born on August 24, 1952 as the eldest son of Julian Asquith, 2nd Earl of Oxford and Asquith (1916-2011), and has been with Mary Clare Pollen (* 1951) since 1978, with whom he has four daughters and one son has married.

Life and career

Raymond Asquith, who carried his father's title Viscount Asquith as a courtesy title during his father's lifetime, was educated at Ampleforth College . He then studied at Balliol College of Oxford University . After completing his studies, he joined the British diplomatic service in 1980. From 1983 to 1985 he was assigned to the Embassy in Moscow as First Secretary. He was then from 1986 to 1992 Cabintsofficer in the FCC ( Foreign and Commonwealth Office ), and finally from 1992 to 1997 Councilor at the Embassy in Kiev . In 1997 he left the diplomatic service and in the same year became director of JKX Oil and Gas plc (public limited company). From 2002 he is director of the Zander Corporation LTD.

After his father's death in 2011, he inherited his title and was now the 3rd Earl of Oxford and Asquith. After the death of Robert Methuen, 7th Baron Methuen on July 9, 2014, his seat in the House of Lords became vacant, so that a by-election for this upper house seat from the ranks of the hereditary titleholders not represented in the House of Lords was after House of Lords Act 1999 had become necessary. Raymond Asquith applied for this seat and was elected by 155 votes on October 2, 2014 by his peers and is now a Liberal Democratic member of the House of Lords.

In 1992 he was awarded the OBE ( Order of the British Empire ).
