Raymond Thorsteinsson
Raymond "Ray" Thorsteinsson (born January 21, 1921 in Wynyard , Saskatchewan , † April 23, 2012 in Calgary ) was a Canadian geologist, known as an explorer of the geology of the Canadian Arctic.
Thorsteinsson had Icelandic ancestors. He studied geology at the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor's degree in 1944 and at the University of Toronto with a master's degree. In 1955 he received his doctorate from the University of Kansas . His research in the Canadian Arctic began in 1947 under Yves Fortier . In 1952 he went to the Geological Survey of Canada with his friend Edward Timothy Tozer , also a pioneer in geological exploration of the Canadian Arctic, with whom he worked closely. There he devoted himself particularly to the stratigraphy of the sediments of the islands in the Canadian Arctic, especially in the Carboniferous (Pennsylvanian) and Permian. As a paleontologist, he studied special graptolites and ostracodermi . In 1992 he officially retired.
He was a Fellow of the Arctic Institute of North America and the Royal Society of Canada . In 1983 he became a member of the Order of Canada and in 1989 an officer. In 1973 he received the Willet G. Miller Medal , 1979 the Logan Medal of the Geological Association of Canada, 1981 the Massey Medal of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, 1982 the RJW Douglas Medal of the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists and 1969 the Patron's Medal of the Royal Geographical Society (with Tozer).
