Raymond Toscanelli

Raymond Toscanelli (born September 22, 1921 in Reims , † March 1, 2015 ) was a French football player .

Career

The attacking midfielder Toscanelli began playing football in his hometown of Reims, where he played in the youth of the second division side Stade Reims . After the liberation of France towards the end of World War II , he was in the squad of CO Cholet , where he played from 1944 to 1945. From there he moved in 1945 to the second division SCO Angers ; at Angers he was able to establish himself directly in the team, even if he was not fixed at a time when substitutions and substitutions were not possible. During the 1946/47 season he scored ten goals in 19 games and thus completed his most successful season as a goalscorer.

Even though he increasingly established himself in the team at Angers, he decided in autumn 1949 to move to the first division club SO Montpellier . For his new club he made his debut in the top French division and had a regular place, but had to accept relegation to the second division in 1950. The team missed direct recovery and Toscanelli ended his professional career in 1951 after 20 first division games with four goals and 123 second division games with 26 goals; he returned to his ex-club, now renamed SO Cholet. He remained loyal to Cholet for several years and won the group with the club in both 1957 and 1958, which, however, did not lead to promotion to the second division. In 1958 he gave up playing football for good.
