Nándor Szenkár

Nándor Szenkár (* 1857 in Pest ; † August 12, 1927 there ) was a Hungarian composer and conductor .

Life

He studied at the Royal Hungarian Music Academy and was a student of János Koessler . From October 1887 he was active as a choir singer at the Hungarian Royal Opera House , later he became deputy director of the opera choir. At the age of 35 he became conductor in the synagogue in Rumbach utca , then in the synagogue in Dohány utca . His works have been performed several times by the Philharmonic Orchestra as well as in opera.

His compositions include two operas , a ballet , some chamber music and numerous religious works.

Szenkár was married to Róza Rottenstein. Her three sons Dezső , Jenő and Mihály were also talented composers and conductors and their daughter Sarolta was a well-known pianist.

His grave is in the Jewish cemetery on Kozma utca ( Kozma utcai temető ) in Budapest .
