Raynell Williams

Raynell Williams (born February 4, 1989 in Cleveland , Ohio ) is an American boxer .

Career

Raynell Williams grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and attended Castle High School there. At the age of 12 he started boxing in 2001, animated by his father. The southpaw is a member of the boxing club SABA Cleveland and was trained there by Clint Martion. Raynell Williams made his breakthrough into the US top class in 2007, at the age of 18.

It started with a victory in the so-called Western Trials. He won the featherweight tournament there with victories over Victor Valezuela, Efrain Esquivias and Daniel Martinez. At the subsequent National Golden Gloves 2007 in Chattanooga , he came with four superior points wins in the final battle against the 16-year-old super talent Hylon Williams and was defeated by just 2: 3 judges' votes. Raynell Williams had his next start at the USA Championship in Colorado Springs . He defeated there in featherweight Derrick Murray, Luis Del Valle, Troy Wohofsky and met again in the semifinals on Hylon Williams. He was able to turn the tables and beat Williams on points (31:21). In the final, he won over Rico Ramos on points (16: 9). Winning the USA championship was his first major success.

Then Rayenll Williams denied the US Olympic elimination (Trials) for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing in Houston . He won there over Robert Rodriguez (17: 6) and Shemuel Pagan (22:12) on points. He then won the first final against Hylon Williams just on points (17:16). According to the mode only valid for this tournament, he had to compete against Hylon Williams for a second fight. In this Williams won on points (20:16). Since it was now 1-1 in the encounters between these two boxers, a third fight had to decide on the ticket to the 2008 Olympic Games and the 2007 World Cup in Chicago . In this third fight Raynell Williams won again narrowly but deservedly on points (24:22).

Shortly thereafter, Raynell Williams represented the United States in Bend in an international match against Australia . In the featherweight division he won over Luke Boyd on points (30:21).

At the 2007 World Cup in Chicago, he won the featherweight over Khedafi Djelkhir from France (28:18) and Mazat Ospanow from Kazakhstan (28: 0) on points and came over Azat Hovhannesjan from Armenia to a demolition victory in the 3rd round. In the quarterfinals he met Albert Selimow from Russia , to whom he lost on points (8:25). Selimow was then also world champion. Raynell Williams finished 5th with three other boxers, which earned him qualification in the America group for the Beijing Olympics.

In November 2007 Raynell Williams started in Beijing in a well-filled test tournament for the Olympic Games. He won there over Hicham Ziouti from France on points (23: 8), then came to a non-fighting victory over Li Yang from China and won with points over Afanassi Poskatschin from Russia (34:14) and Arturo Santos from Mexico (31:22 ) Tournament winner.

In two subsequent international matches in Zunyi / China he was defeated by the Chinese Gu Yu on points (16:22) and won on points over Galib Jafarow from Kazakhstan .

In 2008 Raynell Williams did not start at any major championships. He is fully focused on the Olympic preparation that the US boxing relay completes in Colorado Springs.
