Rečnik srpskohrvatskog književnog i narodnog jezika

Rečnik srpskohrvatskog književnog i narodnog jezika (dictionary of Serbo-Croatian literary and folk language), often just Rečnik SANU (SANU dictionary), is an ongoing standard dictionary of the Serbo-Croatian language in the štokavian dialect with its two variants of Ekavian and Ijekavian. By 2015, 19 volumes had been published up to the letter P. The entire work should comprise 35 volumes. The dictionary is published by the Serbian Language Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU) and started in 1959. It is considered the most extensive dictionary of any Slavic language.

history

The dictionary was first initiated by Stojan Novaković in 1888 when, on September 10, 1888, on the occasion of the hundredth birthday of Vuk Stefanović Karadžić in the introductory speech at the Serbian Academy, he proposed the elaboration of a large national dictionary of the contemporary Serbian language. It should cover their development since the time of Dositej Obradović and Vuk Stefanović Karadžić.

The title of the work changed several times: in the 19th century - Akademijski srpski rečnik and Rečnik književnog jezika srpskoga ; Early 20th century - Akademijski rečnik narodnoga i književnoga jezika , 1913 - Srpski rečnik književnoga i narodnoga jezika , 1915 - Rečnik književnog jezika srpskoga , until 1938 - Rečnik narodnog književnog jezika srps . 1944 - Rečnik srpskoga književnog i narodnog jezika , 1953 - Rečnik srpskohrvatskog književnog jezika . In 1959 the SANU dictionary was named Rečnik srpskohrvatskog književnog i narodnog jezika .

scope

Around 450,000 key words are to be explained in over 30 volumes. For comparison, the OED ( Oxford English Dictionary ) has 600,000 keywords, the German dictionary 320,000. The 18 volume covered 200,000 words, the letter O includes 10,000 terms. After the publication of the 19th volume, 250,000 lexemes were dealt with, which means about half of the future final volume. The multinational character of the dictionary is evident from the 8 million index cards that have been collected for the work since the 19th century, which come from today's language areas of Bosnian, Croatian, Montenegrin and Serbian. In volume 17, for example, the lexem oko (dt. Um , eye) is dealt with in 180 phraseological variants and idioms, which comprises 12 pages of two-column text. With the 19th volume the lexemes began with the letter P, which will take up 5-8 volumes in 165 boxes with 4,000–4500 index cards each.

Specialty

The dictionary retained its original title and purpose even after the fall of the Yugoslav Federation. It therefore includes both words that come from Croatian and Serbian authors. The term Serbo-Croatian was first coined by Jacob Grimm in 1824 , who was taken over by Jernej Kopitar in 1836 . Since 1854 this was also found in Croatian, 1865th in German, 1867th in Italian, 1869th in French and 1883th in English grammars. Due to this historical concept, Ivan Klajn , among others, advocates retaining the original title of the dictionary, although many faculties now have separate chairs for Serbian and Croatian.
