Reactant
A reactant (also reactant , in older literature also reagent or starting material ) is a substance that is consumed in the course of a chemical reaction .
Both elements and chemical compounds can be used as reactants . In the chemical industry, products are specifically manufactured from reactants . Therefore, such substances are also referred to as starting materials . In a chemical equilibrium , the distinction between reactant and product no longer makes sense.
Demarcation
In catalysis and enzymatics , a starting material is also called a substrate .
In metabolism , precursors are also used.
The chemicals law names basic substances with which prohibited or dangerous substances can be produced, precursor substances .
