Real Soft 3D (formerly Real 3D ) is a 3D modeling, animation, and ray tracing program run by Realsoft Graphic Oy, Finland, for the Amiga -Heimcomputer and later for Linux , IRIX , Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows was developed .

The first lines of program text were written in 1983 by the two brothers Juha and Vesa Meskanen on a Commodore 64 . However, Real 3D development didn't begin until 1985 when Juha Meskanen began studying at the Technical University of Lahti, Finland. Juha's brother Vesa joined the development of the program and ended his university career in 1989 to start Realsoft Oy. The first commercial Real 3D version was released for the Amiga that same year, with features such as Constructive Solid Geometry , support for soft, curved surfaces made of quadrics, and a photo-realistic ray tracer . Version 1.2, published in 1990, was sold in various European countries. Version 1.4 was released in December 1991. It was the last version that came from the original Real 3D source code .

Real 3D gained maturity two years later, in 1993, with Version 2 developed from scratch. The new source code base allowed features such as Boolean operations, CSG primitives, B-splines , physics-based simulation and animation , morphing- based animation techniques and high image quality for the calculated images. It took advantage of the Amiga's multitasking capabilities , allowing the user to edit a scene while an image was being calculated. Version 2 was also the first version ported to Windows and released in 1994.

Version 3.5, released in 1996, was the last version based on the program architecture of the version 2 source code. Realsoft Oy started a new, large software development project in 1994. The project entailed an elaborate new version of the complete source code, with object-oriented design , platform independence of the source code, modularity and the adoption of various modern software development methods.

Version 4 was released in 2000. With this release, the product was renamed Realsoft 3D. Although version 4 was published for several platforms (Windows, Linux, IRIX), no new Amiga version followed.

The next major version jump was to version 4.5 in 2002. B. Caustic and Global Illumination .

Version 5, published in October 2004, expanded the range of functions in all program areas, and icons with 32 bit color depth were also supported in the graphical user interface .

The current version 6 was released in 2007. A tool for the parametric creation of plant models ( L-System ) and a tool for the simple creation of buildings were introduced, a version for Mac OS X and versions for the 64-bit counterparts of Linux and Windows were also released. These calculate images a lot faster than the 32-bit versions, since Realsoft 3D calculates internally with 64-bit wide color channels and can also output these in its own IFF format.
