Rebala is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural community of Jõelähtme ( Jõelähtme vald ) in Harju County ( Harju maakond ).

Description and history

Rebala (German Rebbala ) has 171 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011).

The place is on the highway between the Estonian capital Tallinn and the city of Narva , about 18 km northeast of Tallinn.

Rebala was first mentioned in 1241 under the name Reppel in the Liber Census Daniæ .

Burial ground

The village is best known today for its 44 stone graves. They were excavated between 1982 and 1988. The Rebala burial ground contains the oldest stone graves in what is now Estonia. They come from the late Bronze Age , the 8th – 7th centuries. Century BC.

The Rebala monument reserve ( Rebala muinsuskaitseala ), created in 1987, contains over 300 archaeological remains, mainly from the Stone Age, as well as protected areas on an area of ​​around 74 square kilometers. It is one of the most important in the Baltic States. It also includes the Karst area of Kostivere , the Jägala waterfall and the medieval chapel of Saha .
