She attended Chester Catholic High School and then studied political science and sociology at Manchester Metropolitan University . She then worked as a solicitor for various law firms, including Pinsent Masons . She specialized in commercial law and NHS employment contracts.

In 2015 she was elected to the House of Commons. She received 49.4% of the vote. In the 2017 general election , she was able to increase her election result to 65.6% of the vote. From June 2016 to February 2017 she was Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury . Long-Bailey has been the Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy since February 2017 .

Long-Bailey at an appearance during her campaign for party leadership

On January 7, 2020, Long-Bailey announced her candidacy to chair the Labor Party. She was supported by John McDonnell and Angela Rayner , with whom she shares an apartment in London. Throughout the campaign, she was seen as the candidate who is in the continuity of Corbyn and who most fully supported Corbyn's positions. In an ITV interview, she gave him a 10 out of 10 when she was asked to account for his time as party leader. Long-Bailey also said in an interview that if she wins, she would like to call Corbyn into her new shadow cabinet because she adores him. She also announced that she wanted to govern the party with a hard hand. As a result, Long-Bailey failed and was with 27.6% of the vote only the second-placed runner-up behind the winner Keir Starmer , who received 56.2% of the votes. After Long-Bailey's failure, observers compared her campaign unfavorably to that of the left-wing Richard Burgon , who also represented very left-wing ideals in the election of the deputy chairman.

Starmer named Long-Bailey shortly afterwards for education in his shadow cabinet. In June 2020, however, Long-Bailey was fired from Starmer for approvingly shared an interview with actress Maxine Peake on Twitter that contained anti-Semitic conspiracy theories. While Peake later withdrew her original allegations and subsequently distanced herself, Long-Bailey had refused to delete her related tweets.

She tweeted just a general distancing on June 25th: “I retweeted Maxine Peake's article because of her special achievements and because she argued for staying in the Labor Party. It was not meant to support all aspects of the article. ”In the Daily Mirror , she continued that there was a valid concern about police violence , that she did not see anti-Semitism in the criticism of the police and that criticism of the police was made in the correct wording , even for legitimate.

Criticism of the dismissal came from the party left around party leader Jeremy Corbyn and the Momentum campaign that supported him. In contrast, various Jewish organizations in particular loudly praised Starmer's decision.
