Sulcorebutia steinbachii is a species of plant in the genus Sulcorebutia from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the Bolivian farmer and cactus collector José Steinbach (1875–1930?).

description

Sulcorebutia steinbachii grows sprouting with depressed spherical to club-shaped bodies and often forms large groups. With diameters of 10 centimeters, these reach heights of up to 8 centimeters and have a strong beet root. The elongated areoles are white. The stinging, protruding thorns are often completely absent on the youngest areoles and are often later bent. They are white or yellow with a dark tip or uniformly dark brown to almost black. The 2 to 3 central spines, which can also be missing, are 3 to 5 centimeters long. The 8 to 12 (or more) radial spines are up to 1.5 inches long.

Their red, purple or yellow flowers are up to 3.5 inches long. The olive-green to red-brown fruits have a diameter of 6 to 8 millimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Sulcorebutia steinbachii is widespread in the Bolivian department of Cochabamba at altitudes between 3400 and 3500 meters.

The first description as Rebutia steinbachii was published in 1931 by Erich Werdermann . Curt Backeberg placed them in the genus Sulcorebutia in 1951 . A frequently used synonym is Weingartia steinbachii (Werderm.) FHBrandt . The type is very variable, which has led to the fact that numerous other synonyms exist.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
