history

In 2003, the students Marcus Börner and Lawrence Leuschner had the idea of trading in used video games and in 2004 founded a company for this purpose. First of all, the website trade-a-game.de was brought online. At this time Börner and Leuschner began studying business administration at the Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences . Shortly afterwards, the team was expanded to include fellow Leuschner students Daniel Freudenberger, Olivier Mackovic and Tim Fronzek. Trade-a-game GmbH was also founded in 2004, based in Hofheim am Taunus. At the end of 2006 the company moved to Berlin. The shared apartment of the five founders in Berlin-Kreuzberg became a residential-warehouse-office-flat share, from which the company operated. The year 2007 closed with a turnover of half a million euros. In 2008 the company, which now has 30 employees, moved to business premises in Berlin-Kreuzberg , opened the first logistics center in Nauen in Brandenburg and achieved sales of 2.8 million euros.

In 2009 there was a fundamental change in strategy with the establishment of rebuy and the launch of the internet platform www.rebuy.de. The company's focus was changed from trading in new goods to trading in used goods. As a result, sales rose to EUR 4.3 million in 2009 and to EUR 10 million in 2010.

In 2012 a new logistics center was built in Berlin-Rudow . In 2012 the turnover was 40 million euros and in 2013 there were 390 employees. In 2016, sales amounted to 88.3 million euros, in 2017 it rose to over 100 million euros and for the first time a positive Ebitda was generated. In 2012, four of the five founders still lived together in the Berlin residential community.

The company founder Lawrence Leuschner left the company in 2017 after a one-year sabbatical to found Tier Mobility in 2018 .

In 2018 a second logistics center was built in Poznań , Poland.

Business model

Rebuy buys used books, CDs, DVDs, hardware and other media products from its customers at a fixed price. reBuy sets sales prices, processes the used goods, repairs them if necessary, sells and sends the items to its customers on its own account. The purchase is made, among other things, via its own platform on rebuy.de from private, as well as via third-party providers such as wholesalers . The used articles are sold on the company's own website.
