Recylex is a French listed recycling company with multiple locations in France and Germany. The main focus of the company is on the recycling of lead and zinc scrap and polypropylene . Another business area is the production of high-purity special metals.
The main focus of business activities is on the recycling of used batteries . In 2018, a total of around 105,000 tons of lead were processed and sulfuric acid recovered with 330 employees at four locations . Zinc production is the second largest division. The zinc is mainly recovered from steel mill dust or zinc-containing waste products such as old gutters. In the area of zinc processing, in addition to a French subsidiary, the two Goslar companies Norzinco and Harz-Metall are active. The production and purification of special metals is responsible for a smaller share of sales. In particular, arsenic , germanium , gallium and indium are enriched at the German locations in Langelsheim and Osterwieck to a purity of up to 99.999995%. The processing of polypropylene represented the smallest part of the company in the 2018 financial year with a turnover of 13 million euros and primarily recycles housings from old batteries, bumpers, packaging and waste from the construction industry.
Recylex's first predecessor company was founded in 1881 as Société minière et métallurgique de Peñarroya , a mining company with activities in Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo, Andalusia . The company's shares were traded on the Paris Stock Exchange from 1882 .
Recylex was sentenced to a fine of 26.7 million euros in 2017 for price fixing in the purchase of old batteries between 2009 and 2012. In January 2019 it was reported that limit values for dioxins were exceeded 18 times, which is said to have occurred at Harz-Metall in Goslar as early as August 2017. The company asserted that the use of sulphurous petroleum coke , which stuck the filter tubes together, was responsible for this individual case . In particular in connection with the problematic construction of a new reduction furnace at the plant in Nordenham , the group's existing liquidity problems worsened, which resulted in numerous negotiations with lenders.
