The company was founded in 1820 by George Ward and William Fitzhugh as the Isle of Wight Royal Mail Steam Packet Company in Southampton. The correct company name is now Southampton Isle of Wight and south of England Royal Mail Steam Packet Company Limited , with the trade name Red Funnel to German Red chimney means and focus on the distinctive red-painted chimneys refers to the ships in the fleet.
