The Red Kestrel is a double-ended ferry operated by the British shipping company Red Funnel Ferries .
history
The ferry was built under construction number 1393 at the Cammell Laird Shiprepairers & Shipbuilders yard in Birkenhead . The construction contract was signed on February 14, 2018. The keel was laid on May 31, 2018, the launch on February 19, 2019. The ship was completed on April 11, 2019. The cost of construction was around £ 10 million.
The ferry was christened in Southampton in April 2019 and entered service in May. It is the shipping company's first ferry to be used exclusively for the transport of trucks. It runs four times a day between Southampton and East Cowes on the Isle of Wight .
Technical specifications
The ferry is of two Cummins - Diesel engines of the type QSK38 each with 969 kW power driven. The motors acting through reduction gearing on two Rolls-Royce - azimuth thruster , of which each is a at the two ends of the vessel. Two Cummins 6B-CP diesel generators, each with an output of 80 kW, are available for power generation. The ferry has two engine rooms , each with a drive motor and a diesel generator.
The ferry has an open vehicle deck on which there are 265 lane meters available on four lanes . There is space for twelve trucks on the vehicle deck. The ferry's passenger capacity is twelve people.
The vehicle deck is built over in the middle. The clearance height is 5.6 meters. There is a lounge area for the truck drivers with a snack in the deck structure . The crew mess , an office, a washroom for the ship's crew and toilets are also located here. The bridge is on the deck above .
