Dudley "Red" Garrett (born July 14, 1924 in Toronto , Ontario , † November 24, 1944 in Port-aux-Basques , Newfoundland ) was a Canadian ice hockey defender who was active between 1942 and 1943 for the New York Rangers played in the National Hockey League .

Career

Red Garrett began his hockey career in his hometown with the Toronto Shamrocks in the 1940–41 season. The following season, the defender, who was under contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs , was transferred to their farm team at the time , the Toronto Marlboros , for which he scored seven points in 18 games (including two goals). In the same season he ran twelve times for the Toronto Red Indians and scored five points scorer, including one goal. In 1942, Garrett was given over to the New York Rangers by the Maple Leafs along with Babe Pratt . In his first and only season in the National Hockey League Garrett came on 23 missions for the Rangers, in which he got two scorer points, one of which again. He also played six times for the then farm team of the Rangers, the Providence Reds from the American Hockey League . Shortly after his engagement with the Rangers, Garrett joined the army and died on November 24, 1944 after a combat mission in Port-aux-Basques , Newfoundland .

Since 1947, the American Hockey League's Rookie of the Year has been honored with the Dudley “Red” Garrett Memorial Award in his memory .
