The Red Knights Tübingen (formerly: Rottenburg Red Knights ) are an American football club in the American Football Association of Baden-Württemberg , Germany.

history

The founding years

In 1991, some students at the Eugen-Bolz-Gymnasium Rottenburg took a liking to American football and joined the Holzgerlingen Saints (today: Holzgerlingen Twister ) as players . In 1992 the players met Rainer Heck, who was then the trainer of the Dillingen Steelhawks and who was hired as a teacher in Rottenburg. In the autumn of 1992 the Red Knights were founded as a club and in 1993 they were incorporated into SV Poltringen as a football division.

In 1994 the first season of the Poltringen Red Knights in the Baden-Württemberg district league was concluded with the championship title.

Rottenburg Red Knights

In 1996 the Red Knights changed clubs and became a division of SV Wendelsheim. As a result of this change, the name was changed to Rottenburg Red Knights. With the runner-up in the Landesliga Ba-Wü, the Red Knights rose to the Baden-Württemberg Association League and became champions in 1997 with just one lost game. In 1998 the club won the championship in the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg and rose to the regional league center.

As second in the table of the Regionalliga Mitte (South Division), the Red Knights came in 1999 in the play-off round for promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga. The Red Knights lost the final against the Darmstadt Diamonds . In 2000 they were promoted to the 2. Bundesliga South after only one draw and no defeat.

In 2001 the Red Knights reached fourth place in the 2nd Bundesliga South. In 2002 they were relegated to the regional league again due to a number of players leaving and the difficult junior situation. After Rainer Heck, Timo Armbruster, a former defense player, took over the team as head coach until the end of the 2004 season. The year 2003 was marked by the new beginning in the Regionalliga Mitte. In 2005 the first team had to stop playing due to a lack of players. In 2006, the former player Cesare De Pauli took over the head coach position.

As champions of the state league Ba-Wü, the Red Knights were able to leave the 2007 season. In 2009 the Red Knights were runner-up in the Baden-Württemberg regional league. In 2010 it was decided to move to Tübingen as a department at the SSC Tübingen club and a new youth team was founded in Tübingen, which gained its first experience in the B-Jugend-Liga Baden-Württemberg.

New beginning in Tübingen - Red Knights Tübingen

In 2011 the Red Knights Tübingen started again in the Baden-Württemberg state league. This year went down in the history of the team as one of the most successful and as the year of records: Arrived safely at the new club, the Red Knights marched unbeaten through the 2011 season. Inspired by the "Perfect Season" and promotion, the Knights took over Bronze in a tournament after the end of the season. Also for the first time in team history, the Red Knights provided three youth teams with Flag, B and A youth. The American Football department exceeded the 100-member limit this year. In November 2011, a new sports field was inaugurated at SSC Tübingen, a new venue for home games with permanent football markings and football goals. For the 2012 season, many long-time players were bid farewell and a general upheaval took place, in the league the team placed in the midfield. In the following season, too, it did not go beyond a place in no man's land. The team competed successfully in the 2014 season and after 8 match days was already established as champions and promoted to the league.
