The Reformed Church of Horgen from the west

The Reformed Church Horgen is an Evangelical Reformed church in the center of Horgen . The present building was inaugurated in 1782, and previous buildings can be found at the same location since the 13th century.

history

A first parish church in the municipality of Horgen was mentioned in a document around 1210. The presumably Romanesque building consisted of a nave with a rectangular choir and was roughly corrugated . The nave was lengthened around 1458 after the severe damage suffered in the old Zurich War . The representations in Werner Schodoler's chronicle , as well as the maps by Jos Murer and Hans Conrad Gyger, show the church with a squat square tower with a different helmet, as it had to be replaced after a storm of damage in 1615. The Kollatur was up to the Reformation in the Fraumünster in Zurich. In the years 1676/77 the church, which had become too small, had to give way to a new building, the orientation of the building and the placement of the tower were retained, as was the rectangular floor plan. The baroque church area was about 13 mx 20 m in size, with the tower adjoining it in the east. It existed until 1780, when the tower was also torn down on June 28th to make way for a large new building. Today's church, designed and built by Johann Jakob Haltiner with stucco by Andreas Moosbrugger , was inaugurated on October 27, 1782. In 1865 the church received the first glass paintings and in 1874 the two frescoes on both sides of the pulpit. The first organ from 1884 was replaced by the current one in 1961. In 1905 colored glass windows were used. Before the complete renovation in 1975/1976, extensive studies of the building history were carried out. In the renovation, attempts were made to come close to the original state of 1782, only the frescoes were left.

description

Oval interior

The cross-oval central church was a bold solution by the well-known church builder Johann Jakob Haltiner from Altstätten in the Rhine Valley. Haltiner, who followed the tradition of the master builder Grubenmann , especially his brother-in-law Hans Ulrich Grubenmann , designed the construction on the basis of the 17 m diameter circle. In the main axis, Haltiner has roughly adopted this from the previous church, two circles meet in the floor plan, which are connected with arc segments of circles of double diameter. The determination of the room height can be traced back to circles with a diameter of 17 meters. He consistently transfers this curved floor plan into the roof. When the roof structure is Haltiner makes the bridge tradition of the mine's advantage and runs the vault unterzuglos far into the roof structure into it. The interior of the church is therefore much higher than the eaves on the outside of the building suggest. The interior is surrounded on three sides by 17 meter long cantilever galleries, the trusses of which are largely invisible in the parapets. The small capitals visible today indicate the places where Haltiner - to calm his contemporaries - had to put up columns.

Piece

The stucco , created by the Vorarlberg artist Andreas Moosbrugger, combines space and interior decoration into one unit. The ornaments grow out of the building in a congenial way, right down to the smallest detail, or run into it, they never appear superimposed. The 60-year-old Moosbrugger created a pure rococo room of extraordinary delicacy here.

The frescoes to the left and right of the pulpit, by Antonio Barzaghi-Cattaneo , were inaugurated on October 11, 1864. Sponsored by Pastor Conrad Wilhelm Kambli (1829–1914), it is the first fresco wall decoration to be installed in a reformed church after the iconoclasm .

pulpit

The richly carved pulpit in the Neurococo style was designed in 1890 as a true monument to the Reformation. The lectern is formed by an eagle carrying a scroll on which it is written: A strong castle is our God . The title line of the famous chant of the same name by Martin Luther was the battle cry of the Reformation. On the pulpit are the carved portraits of the reformers Huldrych Zwingli (center), Jean Calvin (left) and Johannes Oekolampad (right).

organ

The old romantic organ was replaced by a new one in 1961 by the organ building company founded by Friedrich Goll . The instrument with 62 registers and 4798 pipes was one of the largest in the region. Their frequency range extends from 16 to 8300 Hz.

Bells

The bell founder Jakob Rüetschi from Aarau cast the 4-part chime, which the parish had to pay 7,000 guilders, while the old bells from the 16th century were melted down. The ringing is in the B major chord.

Events

Until the construction of the parish hall and the parish hall in Schinzenhof, in addition to concerts, the meetings of the parish and the political community were held in the largest pub in Horgen, which has only rarely been the case since then. In addition to the church services, organ and choir concerts are fixed events.
