Antonio Barzaghi-Cattaneo (born March 14, 1834 in Lugano , † October 29, 1922 in Paradiso ) was a Swiss painter .

Life and works

Barzaghi received his training at the Somasker Academy in Lugano, then at the municipal drawing school and finally with Giuseppe Bertini at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan . He initially worked as a history painter , but then increasingly switched to fresco painting . In 1867 he created depictions of saints in the Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Spiridon in Trieste , in 1869 the painting Assunzione della Vergine in the parish church of San Maurizio von Bioggio , in 1872 frescoes for the Hotel National in Lucerne and in 1875 frescoes in the Reformed Church in Horgen .

From 1883 to 1886 Barzaghi lived in Paris , where he mainly worked as a portrait painter . He then worked in London and Dublin until 1895 . His best-known works include the ceiling paintings in the foyer of the Federal Palace in Bern and the decor of the Tonhalle in Zurich (1895). In addition, Barzaghi was one of the restorers of the Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Lugano. From 1906 to 1908 he belonged to the Swiss Federal Art Commission at
